Difficult to see with the naked eye, spider mites are microscopic members of the arachnid family. They are similar to spiders but much smaller and come in a range of colors, from brown to red, green and yellow, depending on the species and time of year. Found on the underside of tree leaves, spider mites lay their eggs and live there. Not only do they damage trees by feeding on leaves and sucking out necessary nutrients, they also carry dangerous diseases. If you suspect a spider mite infestation and need a tree service in Owings Mills, Reisterstown or the Baltimore area, Keil Tree Experts can help.

Spider Mites on Trees

One clue that you have spider mites on your trees is the appearance of small, light-colored dots or specks on the leaves. These marks are due to spider mites sucking the sap from the tree, resulting in dead plant tissue. If you have missed this first sign, a fine webbing appears, and leaves will eventually scorch around the edges and fall off the tree.

Some of the trees that are commonly infected by spider mites include Spruce, Burning Bush, Boxwood, Juniper, Arborvitae, Douglas-Fir, Hemlock, and Pine.

Spider Mite Identification

Spider mites can be detrimental to your trees, but if caught early the damage will be minimal. If you suspect a spider mite problem, use a magnifying glass and look for moving dots on leaves or needles. Those mobile dots are spider mites. You could also try the white paper test. Shake a branch or some leaves over a white sheet of paper. The fallen mites appear as tiny black, red or brown moving dots.
